The Complete UK Student Visa Guide for 2025

What is the UK Student Visa?

The UK Student Visa (formerly known as the Tier 4 General Student Visa) allows international students to study in the UK at a university or college that holds a Student Sponsor Licence. If you are from outside the UK, Ireland, or the EU Settlement Scheme, you will almost certainly need this visa to study in the UK.

Who Needs a UK Student Visa?

You need a Student Visa if you are:

  • Aged 18 or over
  • From outside the UK
  • Studying a course longer than 6 months at a university or approved institution
  • Your course is at an institution with a Student Sponsor Licence

Citizens of EU, EEA, and Swiss countries who did not apply for EU Settlement Status by 30 June 2021 also need a Student Visa.

Step 1: Receive a Confirmed Offer from a Licensed Sponsor

Your first step is securing an offer from a UK university that holds a Student Sponsor Licence. Glenville Heights only works with licensed institutions.

Once you accept an unconditional offer, your university will issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number. This unique reference number is essential for your visa application.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

To apply for a UK Student Visa, you'll need:

DocumentNotes
|----------|-------|

Valid passportMust be valid throughout your course
CAS numberProvided by your university
Proof of financesTypically 9 months' course fees + £1,334/month for London or £1,023/month for elsewhere
English language testIELTS Academic: typically 5.5–6.5+ depending on course
ATAS certificateRequired for certain sensitive subjects
TB test resultsRequired if you're from specific countries
Academic transcriptsCertified copies

Step 3: Financial Requirements

The UK Home Office requires evidence that you can fund your tuition fees AND living costs. Specifically:

  • Tuition fees: First year's fees in full (or £1,334/month in London, £1,023/month elsewhere if your institution holds funds)
  • Maintenance: You must show 28 consecutive days of funds in a bank account before applying

These funds can be held in your own account, a parent's account, or an official financial sponsor's letter.

Step 4: Apply Online

Apply for your Student Visa online at GOV.UK. The application fee is £490 and must be paid at the time of applying. You'll also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge — currently £776 per year, which gives you access to NHS healthcare.

You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts.

Step 5: Attend a Biometric Appointment

After submitting your online application, you'll be asked to attend an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in your country to provide your fingerprints and photograph (biometrics).

Step 6: Wait for a Decision

Processing times vary by country but are typically 3–8 weeks. Check the current processing times on GOV.UK before you apply.

Common Reasons for Refusal — and How to Avoid Them

The most common reasons for Student Visa refusals include:

  • Insufficient financial evidence — funds not held for the full 28 days
  • Weak ties to home country — the officer isn't satisfied you'll return after studying
  • Inconsistent documentation — mismatches between your application and supporting documents
  • English language below requirement — ensure your IELTS score meets your specific course requirement
  • Missing or unsigned documents
  • Glenville Heights has a 98% visa success rate because our advisors review every element of your application before submission.

    Working During Your Studies

On a UK Student Visa, you can typically work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official holidays. Your CAS letter will specify any work restrictions.

After You Graduate — The Graduate Route

Once you complete your degree, you may be eligible for the Graduate Visa, which allows you to stay in the UK and work for 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates) without needing a job offer. This is an excellent pathway to starting your UK career.
